Reduce Anxiety with Sedation Dentistry

Dental phobia can make routine visits to the dentist challenging, causing some patients to forgo critical periodontal and dental care. This can result in oral health complications and costly restorative treatments. To ensure patients feel comfortable and confident during their dental procedure, Dr. Navid Baradarian in Manhattan and New York, NY, offers various sedation dentistry options. These include nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and intravenous (IV) sedation which is administered by an anesthesiologist. In addition to providing relief from discomfort, these sedation dentistry options can ease concerns about your dental procedure, so you can receive the care you need.

About Sedation Dentistry

Untreated tooth decay and gum disease can be harmful to your oral and overall health, and eventually result in tooth loss. Routine exams and cleanings can prevent longterm complications, but some patients avoid the care they need due to dental anxiety. Sedation dentistry provides patients with a comfortable way to receive important procedures and periodontal disease treatments. We offer several safe, effective sedation options:

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a mild sedative. It is administered through a facial mask that fits comfortably over your nose. To maximize your comfort, our team can adjust the level of sedation throughout treatment. Nitrous oxide takes effect quickly, allowing patients to feel an immediate sense of calm. However, you will remain alert and able to breathe and communicate freely. Since this sedative promptly leaves your system, you may drive yourself home after your procedure.

Oral Sedation

For a deeper level of relaxation, we may recommend oral sedation. Dr. Baradarian can prescribe medication, which you can take either the night before or one hour prior to your treatment. With oral sedation, many patients feel drowsy and can barely recall their treatment. To ensure your safety, you must schedule transportation to and from your appointment.

IV Sedation

Administered directly into the vein, IV sedation places patients in a light sleep state. During treatment, you will be able to follow instructions, but you will likely have no memory of the procedure. This option is often used for more complex procedures, such as dental implants surgery. To ensure your safety, our team works with a trained anesthesiologist to administer IV sedation. This method is different than general anesthesia, and has little to no risk of complications. Due to drowsiness, we require that patients schedule a friend or loved one to drive them to and from their procedure.
