A Variety of Gum Disease Treatments to Help Your Smile Thrive
Dr. Navid Baradarian is an esteemed periodontist who offers a wide variety of gum disease treatments at our New York, NY, practice. These advanced procedures can calm inflammation, heal infection, and regenerate receding gum tissue. He can use the LANAP® protocol, Chao Pinhole® surgical technique, or traditional gum grafting, all of which can result in healthier teeth and gums. We also offer platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy which helps accelerate the healing process by using your own blood platelets to help stimulate growth of new tissue.
Nonsurgical Gum Disease Treatments
Scaling and Root Planing
For patients with early signs of gum disease, Dr. Baradarian can provide a deep cleaning that will include scaling and root planing. This treatment removes plaque buildup above and below the gum line that routine brushing cannot address. Before administering treatment, he will apply a topical anesthetic to numb the area. With an ultrasonic scaler, he will remove plaque buildup from the base of the teeth as well as from the pockets that have formed around them. With a root planing instrument, he will smooth the surfaces of your tooth roots, allowing your gums to firmly reattach to your teeth. Once the procedure is complete, he will apply a topical antibiotic ointment along your gum line to treat any infection. The overall procedure takes about an hour, and you can return to your normal activities immediately.
Tray Delivery Systems
This noninvasive treatment is often used in combination with scaling and root planing and can treat the early stages of gum disease in the comfort of your home. During your consultation, Dr. Baradarian will take impressions of your teeth for a dental lab to use in fabricating customized dental trays. Once the trays are complete, he will provide you with a medicated ointment to place inside the trays that will treat the symptoms of gum disease below the gum line. The trays should be worn each day for about 30 minutes.
Periodontal disease is a common problem with potentially serious consequences, and it should be treated as soon as possible.
Surgical Gum Disease Treatments
Traditional Gum Graft Surgery
When gums have receded or thinned out and begun exposing the tooth roots, Dr. Baradarian can perform a gum graft procedure. He will first administer anesthesia, remove tissue from the roof of your mouth, and attach it with sutures to cover the exposed roots. The overall procedure takes about one to two hours, and you can return to daily activity within 24 hours. You will be given detailed postoperative instructions to follow to ensure a smooth and successful recovery. In most cases, it will take about two weeks until you are fully recovered. However, with gum grafting, it may take up to six visits before all the areas that require treatment are addressed.
LANAP Laser Periodontal Surgery
LANAP Laser Periodontal Surgery is provided over the course of two office visits. The laser will seal the blood vessels and nerve endings to aid recovery, but your gums will need some time to regenerate. During this procedure, Dr. Baradarian will use a high-powered laser probe to remove unhealthy tissue and bacteria from within the gum pockets. After the area is thoroughly disinfected and the root surfaces are smoothed with an ultrasonic scaler, he will use a laser to create a gel clot containing periodontal ligament fibers to prevent bacteria from re-entering. Over the course of the next few months, Dr. Baradarian will monitor your healing to ensure healthy gum regeneration is occurring.
Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique
During the Chao Pinhole surgical technique Dr. Baradarian will apply a topical anesthetic to numb the area being treated and insert a small needle above your gum line to create a pinhole. Using special dental instrumentation, he will gently shift and guide the gum tissue back into proper position, then insert collagen strips to stabilize the gums. The pinhole should close within 24 hours, and you can expect a full recovery within a week.
Pocket Reduction Procedure
Dr. Baradarian will administer anesthesia and make an incision in your gum line to gently fold back the infected gum tissue. He will then remove the unhealthy bacteria and surgically secure the tissue flap back into place. If necessary, before reattaching the flap, he will smooth the root surfaces to prevent bacteria from getting trapped beneath your gum line, allowing the gum tissue to quickly reattach to your tooth. The overall procedure lasts about an hour, and recovery takes about two to three weeks.
When severe jawbone degeneration has occurred, Dr. Baradarian will make an incision to your gum line, fold back the tissue, and remove unhealthy bacteria. To promote soft and hard tissue regeneration, he will insert tissue-stimulating proteins before reattaching the flap. The procedure generally takes one to two hours, and you will need about a month to recover.
If excess gum tissue is covering a tooth in need of a dental crown, Dr. Baradarian can gently remove the tissue to foster the success of your restoration.
