Gum Recession Is Serious

When the soft tissue surrounding your tooth begins to pull away from the base, it can expose tooth roots and lead to an unattractive gum line and dental sensitivity. Over time, as the tissue continues to recede, gaps will begin to form around the bases of the teeth, trapping plaque and bacteria. If left untreated, this can eventually lead to tooth decay, gum disease, tooth loss, and other serious health concerns.
Gum recession is typically caused by:

  • Poor oral hygiene

  • Gum disease

  • Hormonal changes

  • Heredity

  • Aggressive teeth brushing

  • Age

  • Smoking

Once recession occurs, the only way to reverse the symptoms, protect your health, and restore your gum line is through traditional gum grafting or the Chao Pinhole Technique.

"For patients desiring a less invasive approach to gum grafting, the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique is a proven method for improving your gum line."

Are You a Good Candidate?

For patients desiring a less invasive approach to gum grafting, the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique is a proven method for restoring the health of your gums. Candidates for this procedure include:

  • Patients whose gums have begun to recede

  • Patients with gums negatively affecting periodontal and oral health

  • Patients with aesthetically displeasing gums

Although this procedure is not considered a cosmetic procedure, it can significantly restore the aesthetics of your smile. For severe gum recession cases, Dr. Baradarian may recommend traditional gum grafting to help you achieve good results.

The Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique Procedure

Dr. John Chao created the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique in 2006 as a less invasive approach to treating the negative effects of gum recession. Compared to traditional gum grafting, this procedure is scalpel-free, suture-free, only requires local anesthetic, and does not require tissue removal from the roof of your mouth.

During the procedure, Dr. Baradarian will numb the gum line and surrounding area with a local anesthetic. Once the area is completely numb and you are comfortable, he will insert a small needle above the gum line to create a tiny pinhole and then insert a special dental instrument through the hole. Using a gentle shifting technique, he will loosen the tissue and guide the gums back into proper position. Once the gums are corrected, Dr. Baradarian will insert tiny collagen strips through the hole to stabilize the gums and promote faster recovery. The procedure generally takes about one hour per tooth, and you can immediately return to your normal activities.

Benefits of the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique

Compared to conventional gum grafting, this procedure provides patients with many benefits, including:

  • Less bleeding

  • No second surgical site

  • Blade-free

  • Suture-free

  • Minimal discomfort

  • Faster recovery

In most cases, the pinhole will close overnight, and you will notice an improved gum line the following day. Although there is minimal discomfort with this procedure, you may experience some swelling for the first 24 to 48 hours. For an overall smoother recovery, avoid eating abrasive or spicy foods that might cause irritation. You can keep the surgical site clean with gentle brushing techniques and mouthwash.
